In Martina Franca, the Baroque is the protagonist! The first architectural forms are found in the church of San Francesco da Paola with a building dating back to the end of the 17th century. Gradually the Baroque style began to take hold in the beautiful city of Taranto and so, other monuments were converted to this fantastic artistic and literary movement, such as the ancient churches of the Madonna del Carmine, of San Pietro Martire (church of San Domenico) and of San Martin. Around the middle of the 18th century, the inlaid wooden altars were built in the church of Santa Maria d'Itria and gradually the Baroque began to express itself not only in architectural forms, but also in painting. The Baroque of Martina Franca is so famous precisely because it was also shared by the citizens who, as soon as they could, inserted Baroque corners inside their homes. In this splendid town, a fundamental characteristic is that of the Masserie, which over time have been transformed into dream locations, ready to welcome guests with professionalism, courtesy and passion.
The historic center of Alberobello has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The entire territory is characterized by the presence of trulli, famous extraordinary examples of dry stone slab construction, a technique dating back to prehistoric times and still used in Puglia. Alberobello is characterized by the presence of over 1500 trulli which make it suggestively fantastic, impossible not to want to visit it. Inside this magnificent magical village, you will find countless souvenir shops that will allow you to always bring a part of Alberobello's history and culture with you. Locorotondo, indeed, the beautiful Locorotondo, was born around the year 1000, formerly located at the foot of the hill, then at the top, Locorotondo was enlarged after a miracle of Saint George the Martyr, so the devotion of the people had a chapel built to the Saint, which towards the beginning of the seventeenth century he was proclaimed patron saint of the town. It is a town full of history and culture that fascinates anyone who visits it. Its name derives from the fact that the historic center has a very characteristic shape, as it is made up of white houses arranged in concentric rings. Walking through the narrow streets of the historic center it is easy to be enchanted by its fairy-tale and timeless atmosphere, among panoramic views and ancient churches.
The territory of the municipality of Cisternino was inhabited, since the middle-upper Paleolithic, by human nuclei coming from the north of the peninsula or from the Sicilian-African area and who left numerous traces of the their life, dedicated to hunting and gathering wild fruits and tubers. The city of Cisternino is famous for its great gastronomic tradition, above all for its "bombette", renowned meat rolls to be cooked on the grill, filled with spices or other delicacies, in reality Cisternino boasts another typical dish. You just have to visit this city full of history and good taste!
Martina Franca has the advantage of being the right town for exploration lovers, as it straddles two seas: the Adriatic and the Ionian. Therefore, in Taranto you will be able to find one of the richest and most extensive architectural landscapes in Italy.
Ostuni, the white city in Puglia, is one of the most beautiful and famous cities in the south, characterized by its houses painted white and gathered on top of a hill in the Murge. Ostuni has Paleolithic origins and historiographical sources ascertain the presence of man since the Neanderthal era. Some schools of thought claim that the whiteness of this city has a precise historical motivation, namely that the inhabitants of Ostuni painted the city walls white because the reflected light of the sun would have blinded the enemies, saving them. After the war this practice continued as the hygienic purposes of lime were highlighted and in fact, this led the city to save itself from the plague. Lime was also put in the wells, to sterilize the waters!
Martina Franca, the small and charming town located in the Valle d'Itria, offers many things to see. But beyond the individual monuments, we really liked its timeless atmosphere, its narrow alleys, the friendliness of its inhabitants. All in all, we spent a wonderful and relaxing day there. Most tourists consider the beaches to be the best part of Puglia, but that's not the case! These small inland villages, such as Martina Franca, Locorotondo, Cisternino and many others represent the true Apulian cultural tradition, without neglecting the food and wine aspect.
